Monodehydroascorbate reductase(MDHAR)

Monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) plays a vital role in the ascorbic acid metabolic pathway. Its main function is to maintain the balance of ascorbic acid by catalyzing the reduction of monodehydroascorbic acid (MDHA) back to ascorbic acid. MDHAR utilizes NADH or NADPH as a co - factor to provide electrons. In the presence of MDHAR, the electrons from NADH or NADPH are transferred to MDHA. This reduces the MDHA, which has lost one hydrogen atom, back to ascorbic acid. By doing so, MDHAR helps to recycle and regenerate ascorbic acid, ensuring the continuous operation of the ascorbic acid redox cycle. This is crucial for maintaining the antioxidant capacity of cells, as ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant. It can scavenge reactive oxygen species, protect cells from oxidative damage, and participate in various physiological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and stress responses in plants.
