phosphomannomutase(PMI)

Phosphomannose isomerase (PMI) plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid (AsA), also known as vitamin C, by catalyzing the conversion of mannose-6-phosphate (Man-6-P) to fructose-6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) or, alternatively, enabling the interconversion between these two sugars in a reversible manner. While the primary pathway for AsA biosynthesis in plants involves the L-galactose pathway, PMI contributes indirectly by regulating the availability of GDP-mannose, a key precursor in the pathway.
